I’ve photographed a lot of engagement sessions across Chicago, and every once in a while one comes along that I know I’ll still be talking about years from now. Maria and Mike’s Music Box Theatre engagement session is one of those.They treat themselves to movies there regularly, and when it came time to plan their engagement session, choosing anywhere else honestly didn’t make sense. As Maria and Mike put it: “The theater itself is something that makes the session ‘us.’ Our favorite date is dinner and a Music Box movie and we both really love movies!”
This session is genuinely one of my all-time favorites. The Music Box was incredibly welcoming and the whole thing just felt so perfectly, authentically them.
A Little History on This Chicago Gem
Before we get into the good stuff, it’s worth knowing just how special this place actually is. The Music Box Theatre opened on August 22, 1929, right in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood at 3733 N. Southport Avenue. At a time when downtown movie palaces were seating crowds of 3,000+, the Music Box was designed to be the charming, well-equipped neighborhood alternative. The interior is an atmospheric-style auditorium meant to feel like an open-air Italian courtyard, complete with a deep blue ceiling, twinkling stars, and moving cloud formations overhead. It’s been independently owned and operated since 2003 and remains Chicago’s premier venue for independent and foreign films.
In other words, it’s not just a movie theater. It’s an experience. And photographing inside it? An absolute dream.
How the Music Box Theatre Engagement Session Came Together
We arrived in the afternoon before the theater opened for the day, which meant we had the entire space to ourselves. No crowds, no interruptions. Just Maria, Mike, and a whole lot of gorgeous light and architecture to work with. Here’s how the session unfolded:
Starting Outside: The Patio + Vintage Film Reels
We kicked things off on the outdoor patio, which is shaded in the afternoon and honestly such a hidden gem for photos. The fence is decorated with old film reels that added this really cool vintage texture to the images. The soft, indirect afternoon light was chef’s kiss for portraits, flattering and warm without any harsh shadows.
The Marquee
One of the perks of renting the theater is that the Music Box customizes their marquee with a personalized message for you. Seeing Maria and Mike’s names up in lights was such a sweet moment. The only downside of an afternoon session is that the front is in direct sun and the light is quite harsh!
The Lounge: Board Games + Vintage Coke Bottles
Inside the lounge, we leaned into the playful side of their relationship. There’s a great setup for board games, so we pulled out chess and just let them be themselves, laughing and goofing around over the board. Vintage Coke bottles added to the aesthetic perfectly. These are the kinds of moments I live for. No posing, no stiffness. Just two people who genuinely like each other, having fun.
Inside the Theater: Pure Cinematic Magic
And then came the main event. Walking into the auditorium was a moment. The vintage red velvet seats, the deep red aisle carpet running down the center, the ornate antique architectural details on every surface. It’s all still there, preserved exactly as it was in 1929. The cinematic lighting inside is moody and gorgeous in the best possible way. This is where the Music Box Theatre engagement session really came alive, and the images from inside are ones I’ll be proud of for a very long time.
