Forget everything you thought about engagement sessions. While beautiful, the perfectly posed, prim, and proper moments may not be for everyone. What matters most is how you want to spend this moment celebrating with your partner. Sarah and Eric wanted their engagement session to focus on documenting their lives in Chicago. They wanted it to focus on living their lives, prepping for their wedding, and capturing that in-between kind of moments. This Downtown Chicago In-Home Lifestyle engagement session gave off the perfect cozy, soft, and intimate vibes we were definitely craving.

When it came to this session, we really wanted to make sure that we kept things as organic and natural as possible. This meant, no fancy lighting equipment and utilizing the beauty of Sarah and Eric’s home to tell their story. Sarah and Eric enjoy making their own cocktails, so in the kitchen they went. Laughs and romantic glances were exchanged as the two welcomed me with open arms as they make their signature drinks.
Grabbing those drinks we headed to their back deck where there was some beautiful natural light. If you don’t know, natural light is a photographer’s BFF. Here, Eric and Sarah shared their drinks while Eric whipped out his fluegelhorn to serenade his fiancé. Fun fact, Eric and Sarah met while he was playing his fluegelhorn and once they got to talking realized that Sarah’s last name is also Fluegel?? Talk about fate!
Wandering throughout their home it was apparent that Sarah and Eric live their life very intentionally. Their home was warm and inviting and reflects perfectly who these two are as individuals as together as a couple.
As for in-home sessions, they can be just that… in-home. However, I always encourage my couples to not be afraid to stray from their four walls for their shoot and have us explore beyond them. This can include their own neighborhood and even their favorite local restaurants and bars. In this case, Sarah and Eric took me to their favorite Chicago bar where they shared some beers and continued creating everlasting memories. Pro tip, if you’re wanting to go to your favorite local bar/restaurant for photos, always reach out ahead of time. Not only to make sure that they allow photos being taken on their property, but also what time has the least amount of people. Less people = fewer distractions!
